Henry Louis Gates Jr.'s PBS series Africa's Great Civilizations provides a broad journey through more than 200,000 years of African history. Beginning with the origins of humankind and continuing into the modern era, the series explores how African peoples created civilizations, developed cultures, built kingdoms and empires, established trade networks, and influenced the history of the wider world.
This middle school curriculum uses the themes and historical journey of the series to help students understand Africa as a continent of diverse peoples, cultures, civilizations, and historical experiences.
